Students working in the scene shop

TA 44 Stagecraft is an introduction to technical theater and the creation of scenic elements. Topics include the basic concepts and theories of design, painting techniques, set construction, set movement, prop construction, backstage organization, and career possibilities. The course is typically offered on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons 2 - 4:30 PM.

Backstage organization
Theater safety
Tools and materials
History of the playhouse and technical theater
General scenic design principles
Mechanical drafting
Employment opportunities

Lab topics include:

Scenic shop organization
Scenic construction techniques
Soft scenery, draperies, and backdrops
Moving scenery
Painting scenery
Basic rigging
Counterweight system operation
