My name is Jeff Wilson, and I am the co-chair of the ESL department at IVC.  I usually teach Academic ESL courses, and teaching is one of my passions in life. I became interested in teaching, especially to English Learners, after I traveled around the world by myself for one year. In that year, I traveled to 17 different countries (such as Fiji, Vietnam, India, and Turkey) and was lucky enough to experience different cultures, people, places, and activities. After making this trip, I have retained this “travel bug” and make it a priority to travel to a new country at least one month out of every year (if I am not teaching summer school). Sometimes, I think being in a classroom with English Learners is like traveling without having to get on a plane as students always bring their unique experiences with them to the class. In fact, I think sharing our own cultures and life experiences in class through writing, class discussion, and group work helps set up a collaborative learning atmosphere.

When I’m not teaching, grading, or preparing for class, I am usually with my family, which consists of my wife Monica and two little daughters, Samantha (8 years old) and Kennedy (6 years old).  Here is a pic of my family in Montreal, Canada, pre-covid.

I also enjoy reading, taking post-secondary education/TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) classes (I think continual education for everyone is important), traveling, playing backgammon or video games, fixing up my house, and participating in all kinds of physical activity, from yoga to surfing to cross-fit.

Regarding my education, I went to UCSB and double majored in English and Sociology. I also have my Masters in English with a focus on TESL (Teaching English as a Second Language) from Cal. State Pomona, a Post-Secondary Reading and Learning Certificate from Cal State Fullerton, and a TESL Certificate from UCI. I have taught all levels of ESL and Writing 1 and Basic Skills Writing for native speakers of English as well.  In addition to my teaching experience, I also worked in the corporate world for about 10 years as a product manager for a fortune 100 company.

I am looking forward to working hard and having a little fun this semester with you
